A pregnant woman who tested positive for coronavirus has died during labor in a London hospital — with doctors managing to save her baby, according to a report.
“Senior hospital workers were in tears,” a source told The Sun Monday of the unidentified mother-to-be’s death at Whittington Hospital.
“The mother had coronavirus and the disease has not yet been eliminated as a cause of her death,” the source said.
“The only consolation is that the baby survived the mum’s death,” the source said.
No other details were given on the death, or whether the child had already been delivered or was a posthumous birth. The newborn is not believed to have tested positive for COVID-19, The Sun said.
The death “totally poleaxed” staff at the north London hospital which has already seen at least 20 deaths from the contagion.
“There is a huge sense of disbelief at the unfairness of this devastating death,” the source told The Sun.
Whittington Health NHS Trust told the UK paper that the case “has been referred to the coroner to determine the cause of death.”
