Trinidad: Mom begs for help as teen cricketer son battles cancer

(Trinidad Guardian) His dream is to become a famous cricketer but after being diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, (AML), 14-year-old Asa Ramkissoon is now begging for a chance to live.
Ramkissoon, a student of San Fernando West Secondary, has been hospitalized at the Wendy Fitzwilliams Children’s Hospital in Mount Hope since late October after being diagnosed with AML Leukaemia, a type of cancer which affects the blood and bone marrow.
The cancer is aggressive and since his diagnosis, Ramkissoon’s life has been one of constant pain. He has lesions on his mouth and throat, passes blood, vomits, experiences diarrhoea and is unable to speak.
Six cycles of intense chemotherapy have left him weak.
In an exclusive interview with Guardian Media, his mother Donna Narace begged God to give her son a full recovery.
“Leukemia is a demon, it not only takes your child but it plays on your mind and to be honest if you don’t have a relationship with God you can’t get through,” she sobbed.
Narace said every day her child withers away before her eyes.
“He has lost 20 pounds. He used to be an athletic, energetic young boy. He is my only son. I need help for my child,” Narace sobbed.
She added, “ He is in a lot of pain. He cannot swallow his little spit. He cannot talk. He shows men sign and says hmm, hmm. The hardest thing is to see him like this. Every day I beg God. I wish I had my father here with me,” Narace wept.
Her father Narace Basdeo died less than a year ago, a few months after her mother Dolly Narace also passed away.
Narace said since her son’s hospitalization, she has been forced to resign her job.
With her bills mounting, Narace said she tries not to worry about her unpaid mortgage which can lead to her losing her HDC house.
Despite her financial burdens, Narace said her main focus is getting her son better.
She has already made contact at the Novant Health Cancer Institute in Charlotte North Carolina and her family is on a mission to raise US$200,000 to give the child life-saving treatment.
Before his diagnosis, Ramkissoon was energetic and athletic, a proud son of the Ragoo Village community in Picton. He played cricket for Trinidad and Tobago Under 13 team. Last year as captain of the Picton Presbyterian School cricket team, Ramkissoon brought his team to victory in the Victoria District Cricket Finals.
Because of his love for cricket, he trained with the Darren Ganga Cricket Academy and the Samuel Badree School of Sport Education.
Narace said her son always wanted to be a famous cricketer like Ganga and Badree. However, since his diagnosis, Ramkissoon has a new ambition to be an inspiration for other children with cancer.
“He wants a chance to live. He wants to do something worthwhile with his life and I am begging for help so that he could get a chance to live,” Narace sobbed.
