India on Thursday reported the highest increase in Covid-19 cases in a single day since October 2020, with 72,330 new contagions in the last 24 hours.
The number of cases rose to 12,221,665, according to statistics from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
In addition, 459 people died of Covid-19 on Wednesday, so the total death toll rose to 162,927.
This was the highest number of deaths by Covid-19 in the last 116 days, according to official data.
The Ministry of Health highlighted that more than 70 percent of the dead patients had comorbidities.
It added that 11,474,683 patients have recovered from the disease, even though the national recovery rate dropped to 93.89 percent.
The third phase of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccination campaign began in the country on Thursday, and will cover all people over 45 years of age.
A total of 65,117,896 doses of locally manufactured Covid-19 vaccines have been administered in India so far.
