Cuba’s president fires back at Trump over take-over plans

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has responded to remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding a potential seizure of Cuba.

On Monday, Trump expressed to reporters his belief that he would experience the “honor of taking Cuba.”

“I genuinely feel I will be … honored to take Cuba. That would be beneficial. It’s a significant honor,” he stated during an executive order signing at the White House.

The following day, Díaz-Canel asserted that the United States would encounter “unyielding resistance” should it attempt a takeover.

In a statement on X, Díaz-Canel accused the U.S. of habitually threatening Cuba, nearly every day, to forcibly disrupt the constitutional order.

“This can clearly account for the ruthless economic campaign being conducted as a collective punishment against the entire population.”

For several weeks, Trump has been reiterating that Cuba is on the verge of collapse.

During Trump’s administration, Washington has escalated economic sanctions on Cuba, with the objective of halting the influx of foreign currency and oil to the island nation.

The pressure mounted after U.S. officials executed an operation in January, leading to the capture of Venezuela’s president, Nicolás Maduro, in Caracas, who was subsequently taken to the U.S.

This action significantly impacted Havana by removing one of its key allies, which had historically provided strong support, especially in terms of oil, during the ongoing U.S. trade embargo against Cuba.

At present, Cuba is experiencing one of its most acute economic crises since Fidel Castro’s revolution in 1959.
