In a report by the Jamaica Observer, Jonay Guerra, the director of Bahia Principe Runaway Bay, highlighted the property’s tenacity and resolve during its recovery after Hurricane Melissa.
The resort reopened the previous Wednesday after suffering significant damage from the Category 5 storm that struck Jamaica last October.
“For anyone who visited the property in the aftermath of the hurricane, the immense impact of the storm would have been apparent throughout the area. Accompanying that, however, was another palpable presence: a strong effort, a firm resolve, and a determination to rebuild and progress,” Guerra stated.
He emphasized that the reopening signifies more than just resuming operations; it is a reaffirmed commitment to Jamaica and its inhabitants.
“Jamaica has never merely been a destination for us; it has always been a partner in our journey,” Guerra remarked, noting that the property will continue to significantly contribute to enhancing livelihoods and promoting sustainable development within the tourism industry.
“Over the years, Bahia Principe has evolved in tandem with Jamaica and its people, generating opportunities, bolstering livelihoods, and aiding sustainable progress on the island,” Guerra stated.
As noted by Bartlett, the reopening is indicative of both investor trust and a mutual pledge to national recovery efforts.
“The return of 800 staff members to work due to this monumental reopening exemplifies the kind of dedication that fosters strong partnerships among entrepreneurs, the government, and the community,” Bartlett mentioned.
He underscored the importance of the resort’s recovery, especially given the severe damage it experienced during Hurricane Melissa.
The tourism minister highlighted the swift actions taken by the owners to restore operations, which moved beyond initial renovation plans that could have limited room availability, all in support of Jamaica’s economic resurgence.
“With 664 rooms back in Jamaica’s hotel inventory, there are 664 incentives for families worldwide to visit Jamaica — spaces that will host guests, create cherished memories, and stimulate economic activity across this community and beyond. This also represents a significant commitment from our hotel partner to the recovery of the sector,” he stated.
Simultaneously, Director of Tourism Donovon White indicated that the reopening symbolizes the momentum developing across the destination.
“We are witnessing substantial and sustained interest in Jamaica from our key markets, and as we enhance our capacity, we are solidifying our status as the top destination in the Caribbean. Jamaica is open, Jamaica is prepared, and we are eagerly inviting the world back with the genuine hospitality that characterizes us,” White concluded.
