United States aims to charge former Cuban President Raul Castro

Reports from US media on Thursday indicate that the United States is planning to indict Raul Castro, the 94-year-old sibling of the late Fidel Castro, as Washington intensifies its pressure on the communist island. An indictment against Castro would mark a significant development in the deteriorating US-Cuba relations, particularly as the island faces ongoing power outages due to President Donald Trump’s fuel embargo.

The case involves the downing of two airplanes three decades ago

According to CBS News, the aircraft that was shot down by a Cuban military jet belonged to the exile group Brothers to the Rescue, which was conducting missions to locate Cubans attempting to flee by raft.

Raúl Castro officially resigned from his position as head of Cuba’s Communist Party in 2021, yet he continues to be regarded as one of the nation’s most influential leaders. He is Fidel Castro’s brother.

This information emerges as the United States escalates its stance against Cuba. Previously, Donald Trump has made threats towards the nation, suggesting the possibility of a “friendly takeover.”

The Justice Department has not responded to these reports. A formal indictment would require initial approval from a grand jury.
