On Wednesday, the U.S. military announced the arrival of the USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group in the Caribbean, coinciding with increasing tensions between the United States and Cuba.

In a statement shared on the social media platform X, U.S. Southern Command described the presence of the USS Nimitz (CVN 68), its Carrier Air Wing 17 (CVW-17), USS Gridley (DDG 101), and USNS Patuxent (T-AO 201) as a demonstration of readiness, range, and strategic military advantage.

The statement highlighted that the USS Nimitz has consistently showcased its combat capabilities worldwide, supporting stability and defending democratic values from the Taiwan Strait to the Arabian Gulf.

This military deployment coincides with the Trump administration’s announcement of criminal charges against former Cuban President Raul Castro regarding his alleged involvement in the 1996 shootdown of two civilian planes from the Miami-based exile group Brothers to the Rescue, resulting in the death of four individuals, including three Americans.

U.S. President Donald Trump has previously asserted that Cuba is “next” in the U.S. military’s actions following the operation against Iran, claiming that the communist regime would collapse “soon.”

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel stated earlier this week that Cuba holds the “absolute and legitimate right” to defend itself against any military aggression, cautioning that such an attack would lead to “a bloodbath with incalculable consequences.”
