WHO chief highlights Indian vaccines to help 60 countries

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), affirmed that the vaccines supplied by India will help more than 60 countries to start their vaccination campaign, it was reported on Friday.

The WHO head thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for supplying Covid-19 vaccines to other nations within Covax global initiative.

Ghebreyesus posted on Twitter his hopes that other states will follow the example of India.

The Covax initiative, co-led by WHO, GAVI Global Alliance for Vaccines and UNICEF, among others, was launched in June 2020 to prevent poorer countries from being relegated while richer nations buy up billions of Covid-19 vaccine doses, Scroll website pointed out.

The Covax initiative brings together not only the countries capable of purchasing their entire vaccine supply, but also low-income countries that will need support, including funding, to inoculate their populations.

On February 24, 2021, India delivered in Accra, Ghana’s capital, its first 600,000 doses of the vaccine made by the Serum Institute of this country.
